Top 10 Robots in Videogames
From the lovable charismatic robots to dull protocol droids, and giant mechanized war machines, we all love to see robots making their debut in our favorite games. Here is a list of some of the most memorable robots from my favorite games.
10: Blitzcrank, League of Legends
Blitzcrank, the great steam golem. This steampunk robotic league champion definitely stands out among his counterparts. With a unique art design and hero abilities, Blitzcrank is a fearsome champ to say the least. Anyone that has played league of legends knows to watch out for his signature, rage-inducing grappling arm.
9: R.O.B. , Super Smash Bros
Robotic Operating Buddy, or better known as R.O.B, was originally designed as a peripheral device for the Nintendo NES. Although he is better known today as being one of the characters in Super Smash Bros. With his early 80s themed design, rocket boosters, and lasers, R.O.B is one of the most memorable robotic characters in the Nintendo franchise.
8: Titan, Titanfall
In the fast-paced first-person shooter of Titanfall, the player is granted the ability to deploy a giant mechanized war machine known as a Titan. These weaponized giants are mech suits in which the pilot can lay waste to the competition with their superior firepower. This break from the traditional Call of Duty kill streaks served as a refreshing and memorable robotic experience in the Titanfall franchise.
7: Atlas & P-body, Portal 2
Portal 2 is a fun co-op puzzle-solving game in which the players play as either Atlas or P-body. Their unique designs and signature comedic voice lines make them some of the most recognizable robots in the installment.
6: BD-1, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Although BD-1 doesn't have any sort of voice lines, its quirky attitude and utilities make it similar to the iconic R2-D2 or BB-8 characters from the Star Wars franchise. As being a longtime Star Wars fan, I can say that BD-1 was a nostalgic reminder of the robots that kickstarted the franchise.
5: Pathfinder, Apex Legends
Unlike the perceived behavior of a robot, Pathfinder is a quirky robot that provides comedic relief among his other serious counterparts. This in conjunction with his fun grappling and ziplining abilities makes him enjoyable and memorable to play.
4: Ghost, Destiny
In the first installment of the franchise, you are first awakened by this companion known as a ghost. Being voiced by famous actor Peter Dinklage, the ghost seems familiar and inviting. This earned the ghost the nickname "Dinklebot" among the community and served as a funny and memorable homage to the actor who voiced him.
3: Connor, Detroit: Become Human
Connor is an RK800 android designed by Cyberlife to be an intelligent detective that assists the police. He has the ability to analyze evidence and determine the probability of a perpetrator's hypothetical actions and respond accordingly. He is however found to have a fatal flaw in which he picks up the habits of humans and finds himself becoming more and more human. This conflict makes him one of the best android protagonists and not just because we share the same name.
2: HK-47, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2
Many robots are noble and designed to help humanity. However HK-47 is the opposite. Designed as an assassination droid, he shows contempt for organic life and commonly refers to them as "meatbags". The player acquires him from a shopkeeper and he willfully serves. HK-47's darkly comedic lines makes devastating capabilities makes him one of the best companions in the franchise. I only wish that Lucasfilms didn't have to cut the funding for the third installment so I could see this character make another debut.
1: Claptrap, Borderlands
As the name would imply, Claptrap is an absurd character filled with talk of nonsense. His dainty shape and hilariously nonsensical commentary make him a staple for the Borderlands series. He serves as the lovable guide that often gets you into more trouble than you bargained for. Claptrap is constantly making jokes and plays a massive part in the comedic themes of the Borderlands franchise. As a person who's played all 4 of the Borderlands installments, I can honestly say that he is perhaps the most unforgettable robot on this list.
